Right Of Way Mowing

The street department is the care taker of keeping the right of ways mowed. There are approximately 200 miles of road way, which gives us a total of 400 miles to mow. Also the street department takes care of highway 118 (formerly 78 by-pass) from the eastern city limits to the western city limits for a total of approximately six miles.

The present mayor initiated this program on the 118 highway and it has certainly developed into an excellent program. If you pass through our city on highway 118, i am sure you will agree, after seeing the beauty of our flowers, shrubbery, and mowed areas. All of the right of way mowing is done on a regular schedule.

Leaf & Trash Collection

Leaves:

The street department has in service two new automated leaf truck assemblies to pick-up the leaves that are raked up in the fall these new machines will improve our ability to pickup leaves. Leaf collection normally runs from November 1 to March 1 of the following year. The implementation of the two new machines will improve our leaf collecting ability.

It will be necessary for the citizens to rake their leaves to the curb-gutter area, at no more than 8 to 10 feet off the street. These trucks will not be able to operate in alleys.

Trash:

The street department has four knuckle-boom loader trucks for the collection of trash, debris, and ect. This service is provided on the same day as your garbage collection day.

Place your trash by the street curb, no more than 10 to 12 feet from the street and away from overhead lines.

Street Maintenance

The street department installs driveway pipes, catch basins, storm sewer pipes, ect; as needed to control water flow through the city to alleviate flooding as much as possible. We also have machines that are heavy enough to do major drainage maintenance such as cleaning ditches, installing large culverts and digging large waterways. The city of jasper has about 12 miles of sidewalks. We have an ongoing sidewalk program to add more sidewalks around our schools, and also up grade our existing sidewalks this will help put our residents off the street and out of harms way. This will be an ongoing program until all sidewalks are renovated.

The city of jasper street department repairs streets as needed. Potholes and patching is an on going task. The mayor and council fund a paving (resurfacing) program every year. This enables us to keep our streets in good repair. Your patience for the temporary inconveniences is greatly appreciated.

Mosquito Control Program

The city of Jasper has a mosquito control program; we spray each district, one day, each week. We usually spray at 3:00 pm until 11:00 am we feel these hours are the best time to be effective on controlling mosquitos. We also put out briquettes into ponds and standing water for long-term control of mosquito larvae. For more information on these briquettes call 205-221-2100

Sign Division

The sign division has regular sign and striping inspections. This is necessary to keep all signage and striping in compliance with the Alabama uniform traffic control manual procedures.
