CITY OF JASPER CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF NEW CITY HALL
Jasper, AL – August 4, 2025 – The City of Jasper proudly announces the grand opening of its newly renovated City Hall, a cutting-edge facility aimed at enhancing community services and fostering civic engagement. Residents, city officials, and community leaders are invited to join in the celebration on August 7, 2025, as we commemorate this significant milestone.
The festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official opening of the new City Hall. Mayor Gary Cowen, along with other esteemed guests, will deliver remarks and celebrate this momentous achievement for Jasper. Following the ceremony, attendees can enjoy guided tours of the facility, highlighting its modern amenities and innovative design that position the new City Hall as a central hub for city operations and community interaction, all set to the backdrop of live music, creating a lively atmosphere for guests of all ages.
"The inauguration of our new City Hall signifies a new era for Jasper," said Mayor Gary Cowen. "This facility embodies our dedication to delivering outstanding services to our residents and serves as a center for community engagement and collaboration. We eagerly anticipate sharing this occasion with the public."
Located at 121 17th Street West, the new City Hall now houses several departments, including Garbage Billing, Business License, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Human Resources, Purchasing, and Administration. Jasper Municipal Court and its offices will remain at 400 19th Street West.
Originally constructed in 1938 as a municipal auditorium through the Works Progress Administration, the building was later named Sherer Auditorium in honor of Harry Sherer, a former Commissioner of Public Works. After closing in 2009, the building remained unused until plans to transform it into City Hall were approved in 2021, as part of a broader city investment initiative. The $7 million renovation project involved removing the solid-color façade added in the 1970s, restoring the original stone exterior, and completely renovating the interior for government operations. Designed by CCR Architecture & Interiors and executed by Coston Construction, the project officially commenced in late 2022.
The City of Jasper expresses heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in the planning and construction of this exceptional facility. "We are deeply thankful for the hard work and dedication of everyone who contributed to the planning and construction of this exceptional facility. I also want to acknowledge the visionary leadership of our city officials who foresaw the potential of this project. It is truly rewarding to celebrate the realization of a vision they initiated,” Mary Cowen added.
The City Hall is now open, and the City Council held their first meeting in the new space in mid-July. The grand opening serves as the community celebration of the new facility, and all are welcome to come see the new space. For more information, visit jaspercity.com.
